Franklinton Center at Bricks (FCAB) builds upon the lessons of history by creating forward looking programs that are relevant to the global struggle for justice and equality. FCAB has a rich and varied past, with many names and uses. Today it is a conference center where local, regional, national and international justice advocates, leaders and truth seekers continue to learn and do the work needed to transform lives. Your generous contributions support the life of Franklinton Center at Bricks and our community.
CENTER FOR RURAL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT and EDUCATION: Bricks Healthy Lifestyles FCAB supports a comprehensive approach to community health, environmental education, food justice, social justice, and economic development in a community where the average per capita income is $13,000 and health outcomes are among the poorest in the state. FCAB is located in the second largest food desert in the United States, with more than 25% of the population living in poverty. We provide health, nutrition and exercise programs that increase knowledge about how personal choices affect health, the environment, the community and the future.
CENTER FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORIC PRESERVATION: Museum & Library FCAB provides field trips, tours and presentations to over 3,000 students and visitors who want to learn about the history of the Center and the surrounding community. The Center is located on the site of a former plantation that became the first accredited school to educate African Americans in Eastern North Carolina. We honor the rich legacies of that story, including that which relates to the Afro Christian and Black Congregational Churches. FCAB is home to the Afro-Christian Convention’s archives as the Afro-Christian Preservation Project.
CENTER FOR LAND-BASED INNOVATION Strategic planning is necessary to develop this work. There is great need to engage experts to assist in developing land-use plans that will result in the appropriate development, renovation, and use of FCAB’s property. Current land use includes: Farm Land Lease, Orchard and Herb Gardens, Water-Accessed Camping Platform, Small Farmer’s Support (Bricks Farmers Market, Trainings, Conferences, Retreats).
SOCIAL JUSTICE CONFERENCE and RETREAT CENTER FCAB continues its legacy of justice, advocacy and leadership development at its 244-acre campus but requires significant resources to maintain its historic land and buildings which hosts over 17,000 families, faith-based organizations, non-profits, government and educational organizations each year; hosts immersion experiences for over 1,000 youths; and provides local students with experiential education opportunities. These gatherings also allow us to assist small community businesses by connecting them to new resources.
