Active Lifestyles

Bricks Healthy Lifestyles incorporates the use of our land and our history.  To that end, we offer the following opportunities for our community to engage with the land in order to safely move their bodies.  Please remember to keep safe distancing and put on your mask to talk to others you may encounter on the grounds.

While Franklinton Center at Bricks is not a part of the local parks & recreation system, we are a beautiful open campus that loves to welcome home community members to walk, jog, run, and bike. We know that there are few spaces as beautifully preserved as we try to be, and we invite you to visit the campus during DAYLIGHT HOURS.

Please know that the Whitakers Police Department drives the campus throughout their shifts. For your safety, we invite you to park your vehicle on the gravel lot in front of Hospitality House 2 (Long Building on the Right Side of Campus) to ensure that it is visible.

Be sure to hydrate, bring water! And to stand out with your clothing, alerting others that you are walking the land. We also ask that you please clean up behind yourself so that the land remains beautifully clean… save the planet!

  • Aquatics/Swimming Pool (Currently Closed): Most people who live in the area do not have access to recreational facilities – a factor linked to poor health outcomes. To address this, we offer recreational swimming opportunities throughout the summer months in the only public pool within a 20-mile radius. Historically, FCAB was the only African American accessible swimming in a 50 mile radius. FCAB offers swimming and water safety lessons, which are critical to all families: according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury and death in the United States. Access to swimming and water safety skills building opportunities is even more important for African Americans, who lag behind their white peers in these skills. Our excellently trained lifeguards are drawn from the local community, and our pool creates a positive environment for families, especially out-of-school your. In addition to recreational swimming and swimming lessons we offer Aqua Zumba, a low-impact, high energy aquatic exercise.
